Hello! My name is Chelsea, and I am the owner and designer behind BEAR & BONE THE LABEL. In this blog post, I want to share my journey with you, including the inspiration behind my brand and the values that drive my work. Since launching in 2019, I have dedicated myself to building a slow fashion label rooted in sustainability, creativity, and the unique spirit of slow living. So, pour yourself a cup of your favorite drink and join me as I take you through my story!
The Birth of BEAR & BONE
The story of BEAR & BONE began during a moment of reflection on the fast fashion industry.
Like many of us, I realized that I was partaking in a cycle that didn’t align with my values. The rapid turnover of trends and disposable clothing carries a heavy cost—not just to the planet, but also to artisans and the art of garment making. When I realized I needed to make a change, I was living in the city, working a job that I wasn't passionate about and barely scraping by financially...
Almost every week, I would dash out during my lunch break to quickly shop at the closest mall. By "quickly," I mean I hurriedly grabbed, tried on, and purchased items I didn't even need or want!
This frenzied buying was merely an emotional response and a simple dopamine boost during days that weren't bringing me any joy. It became clear that the shopping wasn't helping my mental health or my finances and the habit was not sustainable.
In 2019, I decided to create something meaningful. I wanted to design a brand that challenges the norms of the fashion world. This project was more for myself than anyone else. Over time, creating items and wearing my pieces I realized there is more to life then brand names and keeping up with trends.
Embracing Slow Fashion
The concept of slow fashion resonates deeply with me. It emphasizes quality over quantity, ensuring that each piece is thoughtfully made and can be cherished long-term. I prioritize sustainable materials, local artisanship, and eco-friendly production processes.
In 2022 I finally escaped the city and moved my life back to Quadra Island, where I grew up; and each collection I create is inspired by the nature surrounding me here. The breathtaking landscapes, vibrant flora, and unique wildlife serve as a muse, guiding my designs.
BEAR & BONE THE LABEL is a combination project between myself, my husband and my parent. We work together to create and promote a lifestyle that is sustainable, rustic and overall enjoyable. Each day we put our family first, we share land, we garden, sew, farm, work and co-exist on our family homestead.
Creating with Intention
At BEAR & BONE, the design process is about more than aesthetics; it’s about intention. I carefully consider each fabric I choose and its environmental impact. I work closely with suppliers who share my values, ensuring every material is sourced ethically.
For example, we frequently utilize up-cycled materials or "fabric waste" to minimize our environmental footprint. We ensure all our fabrics are of verified quality and are treated with care.
Moreover, I strive to create timeless pieces that can be worn in various ways. Each garment can transition from casual daywear to evening attire, allowing customers to express their individual style while making sustainable choices.
Building a Community
From the beginning, I envisioned BEAR & BONE as more than just a brand; I aimed to foster a community. I am inspired by the connections I have built with my customers and fellow creators who value slow fashion. For example, I frequently engage with local artisans, where we learn to upcycle old garments into new masterpieces, promoting creativity and sustainability.
BEAR & BONE THE LABEL isn't the only one embracing this lifestyle; my husband frequently shares our rural experiences on YouTube. His content often features fishing, boating, and nature exploration. We strive to live off the land as much as we can, aiming for an "off-grid" lifestyle. During most of my childhood on Quadra Island, we lived without electricity, relying solely on a generator. Connecting to the grid has greatly helped in maintaining community ties and staying connected.

Overcoming Challenges
No journey is free from hurdles. I have often faced doubts about whether I could sustain a business grounded in slow fashion principles. However, the growing awareness of sustainable fashion offers hope and motivation. People have been receptive and supportive and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
This year, as of January 2025 I have stepped into my role with BEAR & BONE THE LABEL full time. I no longer hold a "regular 9 - 5" I am pleased to announce that I am able to focus on what matters most to me.
That being said, this journey is still full of ups and downs. Such as Finding the right materials at a fair price continues to be challenging. Getting my voice and my values across through social media is an unending challenge. The costs of shipping, constantly rising, makes it hard to offer reasonable prices. However, I see this as an opportunity for growth. Each challenge encourages us to innovate and adapt, fuelling my passion for creating a responsible clothing label.
Celebrating Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of BEAR & BONE. This goes beyond materials; it’s about nurturing a culture of mindful living. I aim to inspire others to make conscious choices regarding their clothing, highlighting the value of well-made garments that tell a story.
In my life sustainability goes beyond fashion. Sustainable living starts in the ground, you grow it, you feed it, you live it. Sustainability and slow living is a lifestyle and anyone can acheive it.
A survey showed that 72% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products. Together, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on my journey so far, I am excited about the future of BEAR & BONE. Innovation awaits, and I am committed to continuing down this sustainable path. I hope to expand our collections while remaining true to our roots and principles.
One of my goals is to collaborate with other designers who share similar values. Together, we can create impactful items that resonate beyond our local community, spreading awareness of slow fashion on a broader scale.
I aim to promote my brand, raise awareness about the impact of "fast fashion" on individuals and the environment, expand my platforms, and provide my clients with high-quality clothing that they choose repeatedly.
