Slowing Down and Living Simply: A Homestead Life with BEAR & BONE THE LABEL

Writer: Chelsea CraddockChelsea Craddock

In today’s world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the fast pace of life. The constant rush, the never-ending to-do lists, the noise of modern living — it all builds up. But here on our little homestead, nestled on Quadra Island in British Columbia, we’ve learned something powerful: that slowing down and living simply isn’t just a way of life, it’s a path to greater joy and fulfillment.

Our homestead is our sanctuary, a place where time moves at a different rhythm. From the salty air off the coast to the towering cedars that surround our property, the island offers us a constant reminder that life doesn’t have to be hurried. And while living simply doesn’t mean giving up on dreams or goals, it does mean finding balance, being more intentional with our time, and embracing the beauty of the present moment.

1. Simplify Your Space, Simplify Your Life

One of the first steps to slowing down is to simplify your physical surroundings. Here on the island, we’ve intentionally chosen a small, modest home that allows us to focus on what really matters. We’ve minimized clutter, opting for functional, quality items over quantity. It’s amazing how clearing away the excess in your physical space can clear away the mental clutter, too.

If you’re looking to create a more peaceful environment, start small. Tidy up the spaces you spend the most time in—whether it’s your living room, your kitchen, or even your desk. Let go of things that no longer serve you, and make room for what truly brings you joy and comfort. A simpler, cleaner space fosters a sense of calm and helps you be more present in the moment.

2. Embrace Nature and Its Rhythms

Living on Quadra Island means we are deeply attuned to the rhythms of nature. The changing tides, the cycles of the moon, the seasons—they all guide our daily lives. Here, time isn’t dictated by deadlines or clock-in hours; it’s guided by the sun, the moon, and the shifting of the earth beneath our feet. And it’s such a gift.

Wherever you live, spend time outside every day. Whether it’s a walk through the woods, sitting by a lake, or just breathing in the fresh air around you, nature has a way of helping us reconnect with ourselves. It reminds us that life is cyclical, that things ebb and flow, and that there’s no need to rush. Nature doesn’t hurry, and neither should we.

3. Prioritize What Truly Matters

Living simply doesn’t mean sacrificing your passions or dreams. It means being mindful of what you put your energy into. What do you truly care about? For us, that means tending to the garden, cooking nourishing meals, creating a cozy home, and spending time with family and friends. It’s the small, everyday moments that fill us with gratitude.

Ask yourself: What is most important to you? What do you want to focus on? Whether it’s spending more time with loved ones, taking up a creative hobby, or simply resting, choosing to focus on what aligns with your values will create space for a more intentional life.

4. Let Go of the Pressure to Keep Up

It’s easy to feel like you have to keep up with everyone else—buying the latest gadgets, having the most impressive career, or staying ahead in a world that’s constantly pushing us to do more. But living simply means letting go of that pressure. Here, on our homestead, we’ve found that the real joy comes not from doing more, but from doing less, more thoughtfully.

It’s okay to say no to things that don’t align with your values. It’s okay to take breaks. And it’s okay to step off the hamster wheel. Slow down. Trust that by living with intention, you will naturally attract the things that matter most.

5. Connect with Others in Meaningful Ways

One of the greatest joys of our simple life is the opportunity to build deep, meaningful relationships. Whether it’s a neighbor who shares a cup of tea, a friend who stops by to help in the garden, or a family member who visits just to spend time with us, connection is at the heart of everything we do.

In our world of social media and digital distractions, it can be easy to lose sight of real, face-to-face interactions. But nothing compares to the warmth of a shared moment, the kindness of a genuine conversation. Try to prioritize in-person time with those you love, and don’t underestimate the power of community.

6. Practice Gratitude Every Day

Living simply doesn’t mean lacking; in fact, the more we simplify our lives, the more we realize how much we have to be grateful for. Here, on Quadra Island, we wake up every day to a world of beauty, from the mist rolling over the water to the birds singing in the trees. This simple abundance fills us with gratitude.

Take time every day to reflect on what you’re grateful for. It doesn’t have to be anything grand. It can be a warm cup of tea, a peaceful morning, or the love of those closest to you. A daily gratitude practice can transform your mindset, helping you see that there is so much richness in life, even in the simplest of things.

7. Live with the Seasons

One of the most profound lessons we’ve learned living here on the island is to live in harmony with the seasons. In the spring and summer, we plant, grow, and harvest. In the fall and winter, we rest, reflect, and prepare for the coming year. The seasons have a rhythm to them, and we’ve found that by following this natural cycle, we’re able to live more sustainably and meaningfully.

Even if you don’t have a homestead or farm, you can still incorporate the rhythms of the seasons into your life. Embrace the slower, quieter winter months as a time for rest and introspection, and let the energy of the spring awaken your creativity and drive.

The pace of life here on Quadra Island has taught us many things, but above all, it has taught us the power of slowing down. By simplifying our lives, prioritizing what matters, and embracing nature’s rhythms, we’ve found a deeper sense of peace and connection. We hope this little glimpse into our homestead life inspires you to slow down and live simply, wherever you are. Because at the end of the day, life is not about doing more—it’s about being more.

With love,Our Homestead on Quadra Island, BC
